First Day of School

Today I began school at El Centro Communidad de las Lenguas (CCL). The school is about a 2 mile walk through the streets of Morelia. It is long, but exercise is a little harder without Dixon, so I do not mind. From 8 to 12 this morning, my instructor and I discussed the vocabulary of the major anatomical systems. Fortunately, a lot of medical terms are latin based so the translation is fairly easy. We also walked to the medical area of the city. I saw one of the hospitals. It is not fancy whatsoever, but I guess it does the job.

I also found out today that there are 3 other students living in the same house. They were just gone for the weekend. I´ve met two of them so far. They are both really nice, and I´m hoping we might be able to go to the discoteca or a cafe together, but we´ll see.

The culture here is much different than the United States. I begin my day with breakfast at 7 and then return to the house around 2 for the amuerzo (lunch). Then, almost everything in the town shuts down for two hours as the people take a siesta. Everything reopens around 5. We eat the cena, which is a lighter meal, around 8. It is a little wierd, but I am definitely catching up on sleep and reading.

I also forgot to mention that I went to the catholic church with my family. It was a a crazy experience. First of all, I have never been to catholic church so all the talking back and forth was strange to me. Secondly, I understood almost nothing of what the pastor was saying, so I made sure to watch the people around me for certain cues to sit or stand or shake hands. I hope in another 3 months that I might know what the pastor is saying.

I posted some pictures of the city. Like I said it´s beautiful. The one of the rooftops is the view from the roof of my house. I also posted a pic of my uncle and me at the airport. This city is very photogenic. I have not even shown you the best parts yet! I am waiting for some better pics. The cathedrals and plazas are gorgeous. I will try to have a picture of it for next time, but no promises. I miss you all!

Here are three videos. The first two are from the LA road trip. The third is in my house in Morelia.

Day 1

I finally arrived after a 4 hour plane ride to Mexico City and another 45 minute plane ride to Morelia. The city is very pretty. My first night here my host dad took me on a quick tour. There are beautiful plazas and cathedrals. I will be sure to post pictures really soon.

My family is really nice. My host mom and dad are very patient with my Spanish. The food is incredible too. My host parents were telling me how the chicken that we were eating for lunch was killed earlier that morning. Isn´t that crazy? We've been eating a lot of tortillas and rice and beans, but there has also been a good selection of fruit and meats. We live in beautiful house. It has like 7 bedrooms and 4 baths. Also, there is a really cool roof where you can see the city and hang out.

Tomorrow, I´m going with my host dad to visit a nearby city and then we are going to church in the evening. My classes start Monday at the CCL. I´ll be sure to take some pics and pass them on to you. I will also have some videos next time I make a post. I miss you all!
